A never ending pan leads the spectator through the premises of a surreal library, stocked exclusively with white, empty books, (Wilfredo Prieto's installation Untitled (white library)) and a run-down and barely furnished private house from the 17th century (the ‘house of stories’ in Linz). The actors in the film are the librarians of the Central Library of Upper Austria. In the first sequence the focus of the camera is on their manual activities, as they handle the books and see to the seemingly endless administering and ordering of knowledge. When the camera leaves the library and enters the house, we encounter the same characters in quite different circumstances, some are absorbed in the activity of reading, others are resting, some have even fallen asleep. Sound spills from one reality into another, disturbing the order of the library and the calm of the home. In these two parallel book-worlds neither space is solely what it appears to be at first sight.
